AI, Society & Social Dynamics

Introduction

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming core societal infrastructure, transforming how people live and work, how institutions operate, and how we promote human wellbeing and impact the environment. These developments create unprecedented opportunities to advance health, education, and economic development, but they require human-centered research, evidence-based metrics, and policy-guiding frameworks to ensure responsible, future-oriented solutions.

This Strategic Research Theme “AI, Society & Social Dynamics” establishes a comprehensive initiative to capture, predict, and guide the multifaceted transformations that AI and related technologies bring to individuals, social interactions, organisations, societies, and global dynamics. Given the rapid pace of technological development and the profound societal implications of this transformation, the initiative will foster research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and strategic partnerships with government and industry to establish leadership and translate expertise and novel findings into actionable solutions for local and global contexts.

Internal Seed Grant Scheme: Nine Projects Awarded

 

The AI, Society & Social Dynamics SRT Internal Seed Funding Scheme received an exceptionally strong response, with a large number of high-quality proposals from across the Faculty.

In recognition of the quality and breadth of the applications, the SRT has expanded this funding round to support nine projects. We congratulate all successful teams and thank everyone who contributed to this enthusiastic response.

We look forward to seeing these projects develop and contribute to advancing interdisciplinary research on AI and society.

The Brown Bag Seminar Series, co-organised by the HKU Methods Hub under the Social Sciences Research Centre (SSRC) and the Strategic Research Theme (SRT): AI, Society & Social Dynamics, provides an informal and intellectually engaging platform for faculty members, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and research postgraduate students to share work in progress, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
