In an era where data-driven decision-making shapes every aspect of society, the Master of Social Sciences (Social Data Analytics) [MSocSc(SDA)] at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) emerges as a transformative programme that bridges real-world social issues and data science. Peijia Bao, a graduate of MSocSc(SDA) and now a Game Publishing & Operations Specialist at Tencent, reflects on the profound gains and experiences during his time at HKU, and how the MSocSc(SDA) programme redefined his approach to social research, analytics, and real-world problem-solving.

Academic Rigour Meets Cultural Richness
Studying at HKU’s Faculty of Social Sciences is a dynamic, immersive experience. Peijia highlights the programme’s rigorous yet collaborative academic environment, where professors enrich lectures with real-world examples and contemporary social challenges. Small class sizes foster open dialogue and collective problem-solving, making complex topics accessible and engaging.
Living in Hong Kong further amplified Peijia’s academic journey. Residing near Kennedy Town, he enjoyed the blend of urban convenience and local charm. The HKU Main Library provided quiet reading rooms, abundant academic resources, and reliable amenities which were essential for exam preparations and group collaborations. When in need of a pause, Peijia would stroll through campus gardens or explore Sai Ying Pun’s trendy eateries, allowing him to balance productivity with cultural exploration. The city’s diversity and energy mirrored the interdisciplinary spirit of the MSocSc(SDA) programme, making every day both productive and stimulating.

Building Practical Skills from Classroom to Capstone
Peijia credits several programme elements for his professional growth. Courses grounded in real social data and examples demystified complex concepts such as Python programming and data cleaning. The faculty blends social science thinkers with technical experts, ensuring that students learn to interpret numbers through a critical, humanistic lens. Access to rich datasets, from global media archives to local social policy information, makes learning deeply practical. The programme’s focus on critical thinking means graduates are prepared not just to crunch numbers, but to ask the right questions and derive meaning that drives positive change.
The capstone project stands out as the programme’s defining achievement. By collecting and analysing media content from ten countries using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and sentiment analysis, Peijia’s team uncovered fascinating trends in how cultural and regional contexts shape media narratives.

Translating Skills to the Professional World
In Peijia’s current role at Tencent, the training that he received from MSocSc(SDA) is invaluable. Courses like NLP, Social Network Analysis, and Statistical Modelling are now daily tools for dissecting player behaviour, optimizing game launches, and forecasting market trends. The ability to extract actionable insights from complex data sets, while maintaining a nuanced understanding of human context, has become his key differentiator. Where he once found “number-crunching” tedious, he now sees it as the engine of creativity and strategic innovation.
Modern problems, whether in gaming or public policy, require more than theoretical insight. Even revolutionary ideas need empirical scaffolding to succeed. MSocSc(SDA) programme has empowered him to quantify human behaviour, translate patterns into action, and bridge the worlds of imagination and analytics. The MSocSc(SDA) programme is not just a degree; it is a launching pad for meaningful, data-driven impact.
