Bridging Heritage & Purpose: A New Visual Identity for the Faculty of Social Sciences

Our Faculty has always stood at the intersection of tradition and progress. In times of stability and in times of profound challenge, our mission remains constant: to make a positive contribution to society through global presence and regional significance. As we look to the future, our visual identity must reflect not just who we are, but what we stand for. Our new logo is a symbol of our evolving responsibility – balancing the weight of our legacy with a resilient, forward-looking vision.

A Contemporary Focus
The new design is built on a sophisticated typographic approach that establishes a distinct and purposeful visual identity. It is composed of two essential elements, unified to present a modern, accessible, and inclusive image:

The HKU Shield:
The shield anchors our Faculty within the longstanding legacy and prestige of The University of Hong Kong. It serves as our seal of excellence and ensures historical continuity.

The Faculty Logotype:
The logotype appears in both English and Chinese to facilitate flexible communication across our diverse community.

The Power of Connection
At the heart of the new identity is a dynamic interplay between the letter “S” in Social and “S” in Sciences. These characters are intentionally overlapped, symbolising the two fundamental pillars of our Faculty:

  • Human Connection:
The intersection represents the fabric of society itself – people connecting with people. It reflects our enduring commitment to social awareness and deep engagement with the community.
  • Interdisciplinarity:
The visual overlap signifies the breaking down of silos. It illustrates the collaboration between disciplines and our dedication to innovation through cross-disciplinary research and learning.

This new identity is a promise – to everyone who shares in our vision – that while we are grounded in history, we are designed for the future.
