On December 13, 2025 (Saturday), the Faculty of Social Sciences organised a cultural visit to Lai Chi Wo and Mui Tsz Lam for its alumni, offering a full day of learning, exploration, and engagement.
The event began with a visit to Sha Tau Kok, followed by a guided tour from Lai Chi Wo to Mui Tsz Lam. We were honoured to have Dr. Winnie Law, Deputy Director of the Centre for Civil Society and Governance (CCSG), lead the tour. Alumni learned about the history and culture of the local villages, the revitalisation initiatives and related research launched by the Centre, and the broader societal significance of these projects.

Alumni also enjoyed traditional Hakka cuisine, further enriching the cultural experience. The group particularly appreciated how the visit combined sightseeing with learning activities.

(Dr. Winnie Law led the tour from Lai Chi Wo to Mui Tsz Lam, where alumni took part in activities orgainsed by the Forest Village Project, which is funded by the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme under the Countryside Conservation Office.)
Throughout the day, alumni were introduced to various areas in which the Faculty of Social Sciences is making a tangible impact, including:
- · Village rehabilitation for nature conservation, community well-being and educational purposes
- · Regeneration of agriculture, including agroforestry cultivating mixed crops and ginger and coffee production
- · Community-based socio-economic models’ development
These initiatives, which have received UNESCO recognition, highlight the Faculty’s role in revitalising Hong Kong’s heritage and community life.
The visit formed part of the Faculty’s ongoing efforts to curate meaningful alumni activities that share its research, partnerships, and social impact.
