A Showcase of Excellence: Faculty Admission Talk on PhD & MPhil Info Day 2025

The Faculty of Social Sciences was delighted to host an engaging Faculty-based Admission Talk on October 15, 2025, as part of the HKU’s PhD & MPhil Info Day 2025. The event served as a dynamic platform to showcase our postgraduate opportunities to a global audience of prospective students.

The session featured insightful presentations from a distinguished panel of academics and current students. Professor Eric Fong, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning), opened with an overview of the Faculty, emphasising our world-class reputation, research excellence, comprehensive student support, and the outstanding success of our graduates.

As a prime example of our innovative initiatives, Professor Guy Abel, Associate Director of the HKU Research Hub of Population Studies, introduced an exciting new Joint Educational Placement for PhD programme with the Max Institute for Demographic Research. This unique initiative offers students the opportunity to train at two world-class institutions. Professor Bo Huang from Geography and Professor Benjamin Becker from Psychology further showcased their departments’ cutting-edge research strengths, sharing inspiring advice for prospective students.

Adding invaluable perspective, our current PhD students, Ms Vinci Cheung (Geography) and Mr Richard Liu (Psychology), offered engaging firsthand accounts of their research journeys and the supportive environment within the Faculty.

The event attracted significant interest, with approximately 280 in-person and online participants. A lively Q&A session demonstrated the global appeal of our research postgraduate programme. This successful engagement with a new generation of talented individuals underscores our position as a top-tier destination for research studies.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the faculty members and students who contributed to making this event a great success.
