The Faculty Induction Talk, held on August 12, warmly welcomed our new undergraduate students and provided them with essential information to support their transition to university life. The event fostered a sense of community and introduced students to a variety of academic and enrichment opportunities available within the Faculty.
The session began with lively warm-up activities hosted by Professor Samson Tse, Acting Dean of Social Sciences, creating an inviting and engaging atmosphere. Following this, Professor Tse delivered an insightful overview of the Faculty and academic resources, highlighting guiding principles to help students make the most of their university journey.

Students then had the opportunity to hear from four senior students, who shared their initial experiences and offered practical advice for adapting to university life. Their insights covered topics such as making friends and building relationships, course registration, academic advising, career development, wellbeing and seeking support – providing reassurance and valuable guidance to new students embarking on their academic journey.

Professor Cheryl Chui, Assistant Dean (Student Enrichment), introduced the various enrichment programmes designed to foster student growth and leadership. These included the Social Venture Lab, Faculty Mentorship Programme, and Student Ambassador Programme. Ms. Cherry Li, the Faculty Counsellor, then took the stage to share information about the Faculty’s wellbeing initiatives and help-seeking pathways.

The event concluded with presentations from representatives of the Academic Advising and Scholarships Office as well as the Equal Opportunity Unit, offering students comprehensive information on the support services available across the University.
This year, the Faculty also introduced the “FOSS Welcome Pack” – a comprehensive, one-stop portal filled with essential information and resources aimed at enriching students’ university experience. This resource is accessible to all new undergraduate students, ensuring they have the tools they need from the outset.
More than just an information session, the Induction Talk aims to foster a strong sense of belonging and community. We are excited to welcome our new students and look forward to supporting them every step of the way as they embark on this inspiring new chapter.
