We are thrilled to share that our PhD student, Mr. Shuai Yuan (supervised by Professor Peng Gong), from the Department of Geography, has been awarded the HKU Research Postgraduate Student Innovation Award 2024/25 (up to 10 awards) for the project titled “Revealing the Energy Transition Process in the Greater Bay Area from 2000 to 2020 by Satellite Images and Deep Learning.”

Mr. Shuai YUAN
This recognition is truly a significant milestone in my academic journey. My research focuses on leveraging advanced satellite imagery and deep learning techniques to construct a comprehensive energy plants dataset and analyze two decades of energy transition in the Greater Bay Area. Through this work, I aim to uncover critical insights into regional energy trends while providing valuable perspectives for shaping sustainable energy policies. I am thrilled that this award recognizes the impact and importance of these efforts.

I am deeply grateful for the invaluable guidance and support from my supervisor, Professor Peng Gong, the Department of Geography, and the Faculty of Social Science. This award reflects not only the high standards of research at HKU but also the Faculty’s commitment to nurturing students and fostering impactful academic contributions. It serves as a powerful motivation for me to continue pursuing innovative research that addresses global sustainability challenges.”
