AI: Warnings, Wisdom, and a Road Map for the Young
As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes the world of work and daily life, what does the future hold for young people entering an AI-driven society?
In their latest commentary, Professor Paul Yip, Chair Professor (Population Health) in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration， Director at the HKJC Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention , and Ms Florence Cheung, Senior Teaching Consultant at the HKJC for Suicide Research and Prevention draw on insights from Nvidia founder Jensen Huang, psychologist Angela Duckworth, and Pope Leo XIV to explore how young people can navigate the opportunities and challenges of the AI era.
The authors argue that while AI can be a powerful tool, human initiative, critical thinking, meaningful relationships, and ethical awareness remain irreplaceable. They propose three key roles for young people:
Be AI’s Driver: Learn to work with AI proactively and make it your competitive advantage.
Forge Your Own Vessel: Develop critical thinking, authentic human connections, and supportive environments that strengthen resilience.
Be an Angel Designer: Advocate for responsible AI development that prioritizes ethics, transparency, accountability, and the public good.
As AI becomes increasingly embedded in society, the authors remind us that technology should serve humanity, not replace it. Building a future where AI strengthens rather than weakens human dignity will require collective action from individuals, institutions, businesses, and governments alike.
