Social Venture Lab Inaugural Summer Bootcamp Concludes with Student-Led Solutions
The HKU Social Venture Lab (SV Lab) recently concluded its Summer Bootcamp, Next Station: Social Innovation for Inclusion, which brought together over 40 students to tackle a challenge set by MTR: creating more inclusive and safer journeys for the elderly and people with disabilities. Through training sessions and a site visit, participants examined the challenge from multiple perspectives and worked in cross-disciplinary teams to develop practical solutions. Team 6 proposed an approach that combines physical and digital navigation support to improve barrier-free access at MTR entrances. 1st Runner-up: Team 2 Champion Team: Team 6 2nd Runner-up: Team 4 SV Lab would like to acknowledge the support of MTR as the programme partner, together with Techno-Entrepreneurship Core and Caritas Mok Cheung Sui Kun Community Centre, whose contributions helped create a meaningful, real-world learning experience for participants. The bootcamp reflects SV Lab’s commitment to nurturing socially driven ventures and entrepreneurial capabilities among students, while fostering collaboration between the University, industry partners, and the wider community. Next steps: Social Venture Champion Programme Students with early-stage ideas or social innovation projects are invited to apply for the Social Venture Champion Programme. Selected teams can receive practical training, mentorship and opportunities to connect with the social innovation ecosystem, and seed funding of up to HK$20,000 per team. Applications close on 30 September 2026. Learn more about Social Venture Champions

Ready, Set, Learn! New Undergraduate Students Attend Faculty Induction Talk
The Faculty Induction Talk, held on August 12, warmly welcomed our new undergraduate students and provided them with essential information to support their transition to university life. The event fostered a sense of community and introduced students to a variety of academic and enrichment opportunities available within the Faculty. The session began with lively warm-up activities hosted by Professor Samson Tse, Acting Dean of Social Sciences, creating an inviting and engaging atmosphere. Following this, Professor Tse delivered an insightful overview of the Faculty and academic resources, highlighting guiding principles to help students make the most of their university journey. Students then had the opportunity to hear from four senior students, who shared their initial experiences and offered practical advice for adapting to university life. Their insights covered topics such as making friends and building relationships, course registration, academic advising, career development, wellbeing and seeking support – providing reassurance and valuable guidance to new students embarking on their academic journey. Professor Cheryl Chui, Assistant Dean (Student Enrichment), introduced the various enrichment programmes designed to foster student growth and leadership. These included the Social Venture Lab, Faculty Mentorship Programme, and Student Ambassador Programme. Ms. Cherry Li, the Faculty Counsellor, then took the stage to share information about the Faculty’s wellbeing initiatives and help-seeking pathways. The event concluded with presentations from representatives of the Academic Advising and Scholarships Office as well as the Equal Opportunity Unit, offering students comprehensive information on the support services available across the University. This year, the Faculty also introduced the “FOSS Welcome Pack” – a comprehensive, one-stop portal filled with essential information and resources aimed at enriching students’ university experience. This resource is accessible to all new undergraduate students, ensuring they have the tools they need from the outset. More than just an information session, the Induction Talk aims to foster a strong sense of belonging and community. We are excited to welcome our new students and look forward to supporting them every step of the way as they embark on this inspiring new chapter.
