The latest child suicide figures from the Education Bureau make for grim reading. For three academic years in a row, suspected suicide cases among primary and secondary school students have\u00a0remained stubbornly high<\/span> – 32 in 2023, 28 in 2024, and 31 in 2025.<\/div>\n
Despite a deluge of government resources, the\u00a0three-tier emergency mechanism<\/span>\u00a0in secondary schools and public awareness campaigns, these numbers refuse to budge. We must ask ourselves a difficult question: why are we failing our children?<\/div>\n

Of course, suicide is a complex phenomenon with no single cause. However, data from the Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention at the University of Hong Kong, among others, points to one powerful protective factor: a strong, supportive family.<\/p>\n

Herein lies the paradox. Without a doubt, parents in Hong Kong are deeply devoted to their children. They ferry their children to school, drill them in homework, pack their weekends with enrichment classes and meticulously map out their futures. The cost of raising a child in Hong Kong is indeed very expensive. Yet, walk into any home and you are likely to hear the anguished cry: \u201cI\u2019ve given you everything; why do you still feel I don\u2019t understand you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Science increasingly tells us that a parent\u2019s love is not enough. The crucial variable is whether the child actually feels that love and support. This is what some researchers might call parent-child incongruence. Alarmingly, a wealth of literature shows that parents and children frequently have wildly different views of their relationship.<\/p>\n

This gap \u2013 also known as parent-child discrepancy \u2013 has traditionally been viewed as a red flag for family dysfunction. Things would be even more difficult for households with single parents, stepparents and such, which have become increasingly common in the past decades.<\/p>\n

However, the stakes are even higher than we imagined. Studies based on children and adolescents reveal that these perceptual gaps are not just correlated with real-time emotional states; they are powerful predictors of future psychological resilience and academic achievement.<\/p>\n

For one study published recently, we observed 88 mainland Chinese families with children aged six to 11. We had them complete interactive tasks while recording their emotional expressions and physiological reactions. The findings were striking. When children felt closer to their parents than the parents thought they were \u2013 in other words, when the child\u2019s perception was more positive \u2013 the children exhibited significantly more positive emotions and warmer, happier interactions.<\/p>\n

In contrast, when parents and children agreed that the relationship was distant, the children tended to severely internalise and externalise problems. Most tellingly, the larger the perceptual gap regarding closeness, the weaker the child\u2019s physiological capacity to regulate stress during challenging tasks.<\/p>\n

This suggests that a child\u2019s subjective sense of closeness acts as a psychological safe base, enabling them to explore the world and express their true selves. If we only look at a relationship from the parent\u2019s perspective, we are missing half the story.<\/p>\n

The second study, surveying over 4,000 Hong Kong adolescents, adds a nuanced layer. It found that when parents and teenagers agreed that parental emotional support was high, the adolescents were in better moods and excelled academically. Intriguingly, the study found that a perception gap during adolescence is not always detrimental. Greater discrepancies characterised by girls perceiving parental support more positively than their parents reported were associated with lower levels of emotional problems among girls. Such discrepancies may reflect a healthy developmental process, whereby adolescents increasingly develop the ability to express emotions, seek support and establish greater psychological autonomy.<\/p>\n

These two studies offer a vital lesson to every family: the most essential nutrient for a child\u2019s growth is never a perfect educational strategy, but a relationship that makes them feel seen, supported and accepted.<\/p>\n

Also, the results of an unpublished study we conducted on suicide notes in Hong Kong suggested that some of our young people have their own aims, expectations and life objectives, which sometimes might not be aligned with those of their parents or guardians. There is a strong sense of hopelessness.<\/p>\n

Perception differences between generations are inevitable. The recent\u00a0tragedy in Taikoo Shing<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 an apparent double suicide of a mother and daughter \u2013 is a brutal reminder of what happens when communication breaks down entirely. When parents and children stop talking, or stop hearing each other, the consequences can be deadly.<\/div>\n

Hong Kong should heed the recent\u00a0comments<\/span>\u00a0of Dr Lam Ching-choi, chairman of the Advisory Committee on Mental Health. We must reach out to a wide swathe of students rather than only focus on high-risk ones. Given the current scale of screening, not all at-risk individuals would be identified.<\/div>\n

The primary function of a family is not to cultivate a perfect child, but to serve as a stable emotional cornerstone. We must move beyond transactional parenting \u2013 the emphasis on grades, trophies and university admissions \u2013 and focus on connection. When a child knows, deep in their bones, that no matter what happens, someone out there truly understands and accepts them, they will not only survive the challenges of growing up; they will also have the courage, resilience and strength to face the world.<\/p>\n

Let the numbers be a warning. Let the science be a guide. The bridge between a parent\u2019s love and a child\u2019s feeling of being loved is built not with grand gestures, but with patience, active listening and the quiet courage to ask, \u201cHow do\u00a0you<\/em> feel about us?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
