Timo Sysi\u00f6 is our distinguished alumnus who graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc) and a Master of Philosophy from the Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Timo is currently the Diplomat at the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at HKU FOSS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Timo began his academic journey at HKU FOSS in 2008, enrolling as a BSocSc student. Relocating from Finland to Hong Kong was a transformative experience, both academically and personally. During his studies at FOSS, he resided at Starr Hall, which quickly became a supportive and welcoming community, truly a home away from home. The friendships he forged at HKU, especially during backpacking trips with his hallmates, remain among his most cherished memories.<\/p>\n

Academically, he undertook a double major in Politics and Public Administration and Geography during his undergraduate studies. Two eye-opening experiences during his studies included a global citizenship internship in rural Ghana, where he collaborated with peers from Hong Kong and Japan, and a field trip following the ancient Silk Road from Gansu through Qinghai to Xinjiang. These immersive experiences not only broadened his worldview but also led to lifelong friendships and invaluable learning opportunities.<\/p>\n

Transferable Skills Gained from BSocSc Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n

The value of a social sciences education can sometimes be challenging to quantify, as its greatest strengths lie in cultivating critical thinking, adaptability, and interpersonal skills. In his diplomatic career, he has found these competencies to be indispensable.<\/p>\n

A significant aspect of his role involves building relationships and engaging with individuals from a wide array of cultural and professional backgrounds. Studying and living in HKU\u2019s vibrant international environment greatly enhanced his ability to connect across cultures and navigate complex, cross-cultural interactions.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, his current responsibilities require him to analyse political and societal developments and communicate findings clearly and concisely. His training in Politics and Public Administration, combined with Human Geography, strengthened his analytical capabilities and enabled him to approach multi-faceted issues from diverse perspectives, skills that he employs daily.<\/p>\n

Many of his most significant university experiences stemmed from field trips and backpacking journeys across Mainland China, Southeast Asia, and beyond. These adventures not only created lasting friendships but also profoundly shaped his understanding of people and cultures, which have become assets in his professional life.<\/p>\n

University is a unique time to explore, take risks, and try new things, even if it means taking a less conventional or slightly longer route to graduation. Prioritising personal development during these formative years will yield long-term professional benefits, especially in careers that span decades.<\/p>\n

Timo advises students considering a career in diplomacy that diplomats are often generalists, drawn from diverse academic backgrounds, though political science remains common. What successful candidates typically share are meaningful international experiences and a genuine curiosity about global affairs.
