{"id":26249,"date":"2025-02-20T16:43:12","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T08:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/?post_type=school_news&#038;p=26249"},"modified":"2025-02-20T16:43:12","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T08:43:12","slug":"research-output-prize-2024","status":"publish","type":"school_news","link":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/school_news\/research-output-prize-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"2024 Research Output Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to <strong>Professor Travis SK Kong<\/strong>, Professor in the Department of Sociology, for winning the <strong>2024 Research Output Prize<\/strong>\u00a0for his book \u2018<em>Sexuality and the Rise of China: The Post-1990s Gay Generation in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Kong\u2019s research has focused on understanding how we can navigate a world of diverse genders and sexualities. \u00a0In this book, Professor Kong examines the changing meanings of same-sex identities, communities, and cultures among young gay men in contemporary Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. \u00a0Drawing on ninety life stories, he proposes a new sociological approach, &#8220;transnational queer sociology&#8221;, to compare and contrast their distinct experiences in these three locales, all within a shared family-centered culture rooted in Confucianism and influenced by Western and other Asian (queer) cultures. \u00a0By examining their shared and translocally influenced experiences, he criticises dominant Western perspectives on homosexuality and offers new insights into LGBTQ+ studies, including issues of coming out, relationship formation, community building, and civic activism.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI am extremely honoured to learn that my book Sexuality and the Rise of China: The Post-1990s Gay Generation in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China (Duke University Press, 2023) has recently won the 2024 Research Output Prize from the University after receiving the Social Sciences Outstanding Research Output Award 2023-2024 (Basic Research).\u00a0 It is a privilege to be recognised by both the University and the Faculty for my work.\u00a0 What a double happiness!\u00a0 With the success of this book, I will continue to contribute to gender and sexuality studies, and look forward to collaborations under the gender and sexuality cluster of HKU Research Hub of Population Studies.\u00a0 Through my academic and community work, I will keep advocating for social inclusion to build a society where all genders and sexualities can live with respect and dignity.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Professor Travis SK Kong<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Research Output Prize<\/strong> is a University-level award that recognises an author (or team of authors) for a single research output item published or created in the preceding calendar year across different faculties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","school_new_categories":[780],"school_news_tag":[778,789],"thought_leadership_category":[258],"department_category":[],"class_list":["post-26249","school_news","type-school_news","status-publish","hentry","school_new_categories-awards-achievements","school_news_tag-academicexcellence","school_news_tag-achievement","thought_leadership_category-honours"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/school_news\/26249"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/school_news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/school_news"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=26249"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"school_new_categories","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/school_new_categories?post=26249"},{"taxonomy":"school_news_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/school_news_tag?post=26249"},{"taxonomy":"thought_leadership_category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/thought_leadership_category?post=26249"},{"taxonomy":"department_category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.socsc.hku.hk\/tc\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/department_category?post=26249"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
